“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access (by faith) to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God.  Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit that has been given to us. For Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the ungodly.  Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while were were still sinners Christ died for us.” (Romans 5: 1-8)

As we enter into this Holy Week following our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ: 1.  On his way into Jerusalemamongst the crowds praising him, “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” (Matthew 21:9); 2. To the Last Supper where he gave his apostles his Body and Blood for the first time, “This is my body that is for you.  Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.  Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.” (1 Corinthians 11: 23-26); 3. To Good Friday when Jesus suffered greatly and died for our sins, ” Then Pilate took Jesus and had him *scourged.  And the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head… And they struck him repeatedly…So they took Jesus and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha.  There they *crucified him…” (John 19: 1-3, 16-18); we have all hope of the glory of God because we know what is on the other side of the cross!

[* scourge – A barbaric first step in executing a criminal.  A metal-barbed whip, designed to rip the victims flesh and bones, and inflict wounds from which they would never recover. (The Little Black Book, 2013)

* crucify – An ancient method of execution in which the victim’s hands and feet were bound and nailed to a cross. It was one of the most painful and disgraceful methods of capital punishment. Victims were usually beaten and tortured and then forced to carry their own cross to the crucifixion site. The Roman cross was formed of wood, typically with a vertical stake and a horizontal cross beam near the top. (http://christianity.about.com/od/glossary/g/crucifixiondefi.htm).]

Please bring your hope to the sidewalk this week:

A Vigil for Life Prayer Warrior insightfully shared that, although she has worn many “hats” in her life, being a Prayer Warrior & Sidewalk Counselor is one of the most important “hats” she has ever worn.  She said she feels this way because it truly is a matter of life and death for too many babies right there at the doors to Planned Parenthood – Madison.  And – she is right.  It is SO IMPORTANT and well, URGENT for Prayer Warriors and Sidewalk Counselors to be out on the sidewalk outside of Planned Parenthood – Madison.  Lives are at stake!!

Firstly, it is urgently important for us to be there with our prayers because we are indeed engaged in Spiritual Warfare.  This is nothing new to the Pro-Life movement; abortion is one way that evil is working in this world.

” Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power.  Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil.  For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens.  Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground.  So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace.  In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming arrows of the evil one.  And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit.” Ephesians 6:10-18

Secondly, it is urgently important for us to be there with our love, compassion, mercy and peaceful witness because we are Christians; followers of Christ Jesus.

Jesus gave us a Divine example in how to live our lives when he emptied himself out for us all on the cross.  By doing so, Jesus absorbed the evil in this world using the same weapons of love – love, compassion, mercy, peace – we are called to use today.

Please bring your prayers, love, compassion, mercy and peaceful witness to the sidewalk this week.

Prayer for Victims of Abortion

Lord God,

ever caring and gentle,

Enfold them in your love.

We pray for all responsible for the death of these children.

Give them the gift of true repentance,

and comfort them with a full portion of your mercy.

Heavenly Father,

In today’s Gospel (John 9:1-41), Jesus gives sight to a blind man.  Upon washing the mud from his eyes, the blind man is physically able to see immediately.  Spiritually, the blind man who can now physically see gradually converts to see/believe in Jesus as the Messiah – the Christ !   Jesus says, “I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see might see and those who do see might become blind.”

O my Jesus, You are our Good Shepherd,
You share the Truth with us, not to condemn,
but to motivate, so that none of Your sheep are lost.
We humbly accept the task you have given to us,
to share the Truth by witnessing for Your Gospel of Life.
Your yoke is easy and Your burden light.
We will not grow weary of searching for the lost sheep.
For in You, we find our rest.
May all we say and do only lead people closer to You,
who live and reign forever and ever.
Amen.
Won’t you help search for the lost sheep on the sidewalk outside of Planned Parenthood?  Please join us during one of our open hours.

John Paul II’s Closing prayer of Evangelium vitae

O Mary,

bright dawn of the new world,

Mother of the living,

to you do we entrust the cause of life

Look down, O Mother,

upon the vast numbers

of babies not allowed to be born,

of the poor whose lives are made difficult,

of men and women

who are victims of brutal violence,

of the elderly and the sick killed

by indifference or out of misguided mercy.

Grant that all who believe in your Son

may proclaim the Gospel of life

with honesty and love

to the people of our time.

Obtain for them the grace

to accept that Gospel

as a gift ever new,

the joy of celebrating it with gratitude

throughout their lives

and the courage to bear witness to it

resolutely, in order to build,

together with all people of good will,

the civilization of truth and love,

to the praise and glory of God,

the Creator and lover of life.

God Our Father, Giver of life,

we entrust the United States of America

to Your loving care.

You are the rock

on which this nation was founded.

You alone are the true source

of our cherished rights

to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Reclaim this land for Your glory

and dwell among Your people.

Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts

of our nation’s leaders.

Open their minds

to the great worth of human life

and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom.

Remind Your people that true happiness

is rooted in seeking and doing Your will.

Through the intercession of

Mary Immaculate, Patroness of our land,

grant us the courage to reject

the “culture of death.”

Lead us into a new millennium of life.

We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Amen!

www.youtube.com/watch (1951 version from The Living Christ mini-series of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well)

In today’s Gospel (John 4:5-42), we hear of a Samaritan woman who, at first, unknowingly encounters Christ at Jacob’s well.  While she is drawing water from the well, Jesus tells her that the water he has to offer is living water and whoever drinks of it will not thirst again because it “will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life”.  The woman asks Jesus to give her some of this living water so she will not have to go to the well to draw water again.  When Jesus reveals himself to the woman, she runs back to her village to share the news that the long-awaited Messiah, the one called Christ, has come.
As disciples of Christ, we are called to bring others to also drink of this living water – Eternal Life in Christ.  As disciples, we are called to run back to our village and share the news that the Messiah, the one called Christ, has come!  By our peaceful and prayerful witness on the sidewalk outside of Planned Parenthood, we are sharing this joyful news with a city that is starved for it!
Will you please be a bearer of the joyful news of Eternal Life in Christ this week??

STORIES FROM THE SIDEWALK

On Tuesday, 3/18, a sidewalk counselor invited a young woman who was on her way into Planned Parenthood to go over to the Women’s Care Center.  The young woman acknowledged the invitation yet still went into Planned Parenthood.  Minutes later, the young woman exited from Planned Parenthood, got into her truck, stopped at the driveway of the parking lot to PP to ask the sidewalk counselor if she worked at the Women’s Care Center.  The sidewalk counselor answered that no she did not work there – handed the young woman some literature and the young woman proceeded to drive across the street to the Women’s Care Center parking lot where she parked and went inside.  We don’t know the full story here however PRAISE GOD that the young woman went to the Women’s Care Center.  Please pray for this young woman to drink of Christ’s living water!

PRAYER AT AN ABORTION CHAMBER

Father, I come to this place as a new Calvary,

I wish to stand here with Mary

and those others who stood by the Cross of Jesus

the day he sacrificed himself for us sinners.

I firmly believe the sorrowful scene before my eyes

is nothing less than a reenactment of Jesus’ suffering and death,

already anticipated in the massacre of the Innocents of Bethlehem

and repeated in the slaughter in the least of his brethren,

the tiny children brought here today to be slain.

Father, I realize I cannot stop the killing of most of these children,

any more than Mary could have stopped the slaying of her Child that fatal day.

But in faith I unite my heart with hers

and humbly adore your Divine purpose in allowing such bloodshed.

I offer you the blood of Jesus,

and mingled with it,

the blood of these little ones,

for their own salvation and for that of their parents,

the abortionist, and our whole generation.

Remember Jesus’ own prayer from the cross,

with its echo in Mary’s heart,

“Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”

But perhaps the hour has not come for some of them.

Once you told Joseph to take the Child and his mother

far from those seeking the Child’s life.

I offer myself to you, as St. Joseph’s helper,

ready to do everything I can for my beloved Jesus and Mary

in the person of the child and mother you entrust to my care.

Dear Father, accept my prayer in the name of Jesus.  Amen.

St. Gianna Beretta Molla is one of the patron saints to pre-born children.  St. Gianna was a wife, mother and pediatrician.  As a doctor she attested that, “The doctor should not meddle. The right of the child is equal to the right of the mother’s life. The doctor can’t decide; it is a sin to kill in the womb.”

When St. Gianna was pregnant with her fourth child, she developed a fibroma on her uterus.  She was given three choices: have the fibroma removed, have a hysterectomy or have an abortion.  St. Gianna chose to have her fibroma removed.  Even though it was removed successfully, her pregnancy was very complicated.  St. Gianna told her husband and doctors, “If you must choose between me and the baby, no hesitation; choose – and I demand it – the baby. Save the baby!”  The delivery of her fourth baby – a girl named Gianna Emanuela – was also very difficult.  Gianna Emanuela was delivered via c-section.  Seven days after her birth (April 28, 1962), her mother – St. Gianna – died from a serious infection (septic peritonitis).

“St. Gianna Beretta Molla was canonized a Saint on May 16, 2004 by Pope John Paul II. The miracle recognized by the Catholic Church to canonize Gianna Beretta Molla involved a mother, Elizabeth Comparini, who was 16 weeks pregnant in 2003 and sustained a tear in her placenta that drained her womb of all amniotic fluid. Because a normal term of pregnancy is 40 weeks, Comparini was told by her doctors the baby’s chance of survival was “nil.” Comparini said she prayed to Gianna Molla asking for her intercession, and was able to deliver a healthy baby despite the lack of amniotic fluid.”( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gianna_Beretta_Molla )

Pope John Paul II declared Gianna “a simple, but more than ever, significant messenger of divine love.” (Canonization of Six New Saints; Homily of John Paul II, Sixth Sunday of Easter, 16 May 2004).

On Wednesday, 3/12 – one of our very faithful prayer warriors and sidewalk counselors called to say that a young woman spoke with her.  After speaking with our prayer warrior, the young woman spoke with the man she was with and they both went over to the Women’s Care Center.  After they were done at the Women’s Care Center, they walked over to the Planned Parenthood parking lot, retrieved their car and left.  We are not sure whether the young woman is pregnant or not however please keep them in your prayers.

A PRAYER  FOR THE UNBORN

+

Heavenly Father, in your love for us, protect us

against the wickedness of the devil, those helpless little ones

to whom you have given the gift of life.

+

Touch with pity the hearts of those women pregnant

in our world today who are not thinking of motherhood.

+

Help them to see that the child they carry

is made in your image, as well as theirs, and made for eternal life.

Dispel their fear and selfishness and give them true womanly hearts

to love their babies and give them birth

and all the needed care that a mother alone can give.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord,

who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever, Amen.

On Friday, 3/7/14, our sidewalk counselors were able to counsel a young woman who was 7 weeks pregnant.  This woman told our sidewalk counselors that she had already paid $125 to Planned Parenthood towards an abortion.  She said she had already given up a child for adoption and it was so painful for her.  She also said she didn’t feel that she had enough resources to raise this child on her own.  Our sidewalk counselors were able to alleviate her fears and send her over to the Women’s Care Center.  Please pray for this woman and the baby in her womb.

Also, on Friday, 3/7/14, four unscheduled prayer warriors stopped by Planned Parenthood to pray and sidewalk counsel.  They all felt that the Lord had called them to the sidewalk.

HERE I AM, LORD

I, the Lord of sea and sky,

I have heard my people cry.

All who dwell in dark and sin,

My hand will save.

Chorus

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?

I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you lead me.

I will hold your people in my heart.

2.

I, who made the stars of night,

I will make their darkness bright.

Who will bear my light to them?

Whom shall I send?

Chorus

3.

I, the Lord of snow and rain,

I have borne my people’s pain.

I have wept for love of them.

They turn away.

Chorus

4.

I will break their hearts of stone,

Give them hearts for love alone.

I will speak my words to them.

Whom shall I send?

Chorus

Words and Music are by Daniel L. Schutte, copyright 1981.

Is the Lord calling you to the sidewalk this week?  (The temperatures will be much friendlier this week.)

AMBULANCE AT PLANNED PARENTHOOD TWO DAYS IN A ROW

On Wednesday, 3/5/14 – our prayer warriors witnessed an ambulance arrive at Planned Parenthood and take away a young woman on a gurney.  The same thing also happened on Thursday, 3/6/14.  These events remind us that abortion not only takes the lives of babies (57 million since 1973) – it is also not safe for their mothers.  Please pray for these two women.  We do not know their names or why they were taken away in an ambulance.  We do, however, know that they are in great need of our prayers.  We should pray not only for their well-being but also pray that they will find Jesus Christ through conversion and that they will seek forgiveness and find healing.

FROM ABBY JOHNSON THIS PAST WEEK:

“… I wanted to share a stat with you that I heard from Planned Parenthood at the last national conference I attended in 2009.

They told us that when people are outside praying at clinics the “no show rate for abortion appointments goes up to 75%.” In other words, when people are outside praying, the percentage of women who have abortion appointments, but don’t show up is 75%.

If that’s not a reason to go and pray outside an abortion clinic, then I don’t know what is.”

BUFFER ZONE ORDINANCE UPDATE

GOOD NEWS!!!

In response to the lawsuit they were served, the City of Madison filed some papers late Friday (3/7/14) afternoon that have made the buffer zone ordinance NOT IN EFFECT until the Madison Common Council reconsiders it  (March 18) and takes further action on it.  So – stay tuned for more on that.  In the meantime, everything is back to normal.  We are grateful to God for His guidance thus far and will continue to trust God to guide us through the case as it continues.

“Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment.” (Joel 2:12 – 13)

A beautiful arrangement of Hosea by a beautiful artist:
The season of Lent will be soon upon us.  Let us return to Jesus with all our hearts!  Along with our other Lenten plans let’s add to our plans to come out to pray on the sidewalk outside Planned Parenthood!  In addition to our presence there – as part of our Lenten plans let’s also invite a friend to join us in prayer on the sidewalk each time we go out.

BUFFER ZONE ORDINANCE UPDATE
Judge Conley denied our request for a Temporary Restraining Order so the buffer zone gag rule ordinance will be in effect very soon.  Although we know that any restriction on the freedom of speech is an erosion of it as protected by the First Amendment, we trust God to guide us through this situation and the case as it continues. When the ordinance does go into effect, Gwen will call those on the schedule for the week to discuss its impact.  In the meantime, if there are any questions – please do not hesitate to call Gwen at (608)393-8545 or e-mail her atinfo@vigilforlife.org.

The psalm response (Psalm 103) for today’s Masses of “The Lord is kind and merciful” contains a message that is very meaningful for all who seek Jesus.  In today’s Gospel (Matthew 5: 38-48): Matthew writes “… for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.” Both the psalm response and the Gospel passage point to the Lord’s  extreme kindness and amazing mercy.  They are like a never-ending well from which Jesus longs for all to drink deeply.

We are so fortunate to have been led to this well of Jesus’ kindness and mercy.  Thank you, our dear Lord Jesus – we are so very grateful. Let us drink deeply (as the Saints did) so that we may lead others to this same well.

Won’t you share Jesus’ kindness and mercy on the sidewalk outside of Planned Parenthood this week and bring others to the well?

In today’s Gospel (Matthew 5:17-37), Jesus takes the old law to a new level.  He tells us that obedience to the commandments is more than just external actions.  What really matters, Jesus says, is our true intent and what comes from our hearts.

When we stand in witness on the sidewalk outside of Planned Parenthood, our external actions are driven by what comes from our hearts.  Our intent is to witness for life and our love of it.  We are there to ask from our hearts that they choose life for their baby.  Our intent is to witness for Jesus and our love for Him.  We are there to bring Jesus’ mercy, hope and healing from our hearts to the mothers who have just lost their babies to abortion.
Please bring your witness for life, love and Jesus to the sidewalk this week!  (The weather forecast is looking very favorable!)

PROPOSED BUFFER ZONE GAG RULE ORDINANCE UPDATE
The buffer zone gag rule proposed by the Madison City Council has passed through two committees: the Public Safety Committee and the Board of Health for Madison and Dane County. It now moves on to the Common Council at the end of this month (February 2014) for a vote.  Vigil for Life has given testimony at both committee meetings through one representative and will do the same for the Common Council meeting – only this one representative is speaking for Vigil for Life.
Please pray for God’s will to be done with the vote by the Common Council.
Here is a link to a guest column in today’s WSJ regarding this buffer zone gag rule:

All gospel reflections and homilies for this weekend’s Gospel (Matthew 5:13-16) point to the need for us as followers of Christ Jesus to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world” through our deeds and actions in order to more fully give Glory to God.

“In today’s Angelus address, Pope Francis cautioned that if a Christian loses this light, “his life doesn’t make sense.  He is a Christian in name only.”   Departing from his prepared remarks, the pontiff turned to query the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square. “I want to ask you now, how do you want to live? As a lamp that is lit, or one that is off?”

“I can’t hear your response!” he said, urging the crowd to reply louder.

“A lit lamp!” he affirmed, “This is the Christian vocation!”

Such a calling extends to all Christians, the Pope explained. “All of us who are baptized are missionary disciples and we are called to become a living gospel in the world: with a holy life we will give ‘flavor’ to diverse settings and preserve them from decay, as salt does.” (“A Christian must give light to the world urges Pope” By: Kerri Lenartowick.)

In other words, we have not been called to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world” unto ourselves but unto others.

Please bring your salt and light to the sidewalk this week.
