Too many open hours this week!

DAY 26 40 DAYS FOR LIFE

Devotional from Vera Faith Lord, director of the Alpha/Omega Life Ministry.

Scripture

These all wait for you, that you may give them their food in due season, what you give them they gather in; you open your hand they are filled with good. You hide your face, they are troubled; you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. You send forth your Spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the earth.

— Psalm 104:27-30

Reflection from Vera Faith Lord

“I am a feather on the breath of God.”

As the quote above portrays, we are upheld by the power and purpose of God. Our very existence on earth, from our body’s first breath to its last, when we leave it to return home, is our Father’s choice and happens only by His willing to do so.

He who created the universe also created that which is “me.” I do not have a soul; I am a soul, as well as a body. My entire purpose in this life is to find my way back to my Creator.

If you have not taken part in 40 Days for Life yet this campaign, please sign up today! We NEED YOU! A handful of people have been filling sometimes more that 10 hours in a week during this campaign because nobody else is signing up. Please step in and step up! Many hands make light work!

From Shawn Carney, 40 Days for Life organization:

“So far, during this current 40 Days for Life campaign, there have been …

… 251 babies saved from abortion – that we know of!

We trust God and pray that there are many others.”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Prayer

Beloved Father, remind us today that there is no truth but you. Do not let us fall prey to the evil one’s lie that we may choose death. Remind us right now that you, who created all life, are in control of all life, and let us know right now that you, who created all life, are in control of all life, and let us choose life always.

Father, please let us hear your voice more today than yesterday. Keep lighting the pathway home, for us and for all who participate in this 40 Days for Life campaign. Father, we’re on our way. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Day 19: 40 Days for Life URGENT NEED FOR PRAYER WARRIORS THIS WEEK!

40 Days for Life Day 19 intention by Rev. Rob Schenck, president of Faith and Action

We pray for a renewal of our zeal to offer generous help to the unborn and their families.

Scripture

If I have despised the cause of my male or female servant when they complained against me, what then shall I do when God rises up? When He punishes, how shall I answer Him? Did not He who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same One fashion us in the womb?

— Job 31:13-15

Reflection from Rev. Rob Schenck

The ground is level as we stand before God.

Job lived with an awe provoking sense of God’s expectation of him, particularly regarding his obligation to care for the weak and needy.

He knew that in God’s economy everyone stands on level ground when it comes to our status as God’s creatures. Because of that central truth, we must take care of each other.

Job also knew that he didn’t deserve any of the good things God gave to him. Instead, those blessings came to Job from God’s benevolent heart.

As an extension of that knowledge, Job instinctively linked his obligation to be generous to others to God’s kindness toward him.

As in Jesus’ parable of the unmerciful servant (Matthew 18:23-35), Job knew that it is an egregious sin to deny to others what we enjoy ourselves.

He actually calls down on his own head severe condemnation and even punishment should he fail to share with others out of his own abundance (see verses 16-23).

Proverbs 3:27 reads, “Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so.” Some things are so obvious that we don’t even need to pray except to ask of God forgiveness and the power to do what so obviously needs doing.

TURN AWAY ON FRIDAY, 10/9 – A young woman got out of her car and was headed into Planned Parenthood when a sidewalk counselor called out to her and let her know about the Woman’s Care Center across the street. The woman thanked the sidewalk counselor for the information but still went inside PP. About 2 minutes later, she came out and got in the car. She and the person with her drove over to the Woman’s Care Center. So grateful to God!

OPEN HOURS THIS WEEK

Monday, 10/12 – 1 needed at 9p and 1 needed at 11p.

Tuesday, 10/13 – 2 needed at 2a; 1 needed at 5a; 1 needed at 8a; 2 needed at 8p and 1 needed at 11p.

Prayer

God, forgive us when we try to explain away the obligation we have to help others who need help.

URGENT need for YOU for 40 Days for Life this week!

So it would seem that the original vigil bag and the 40 Days for Life signs have been stolen. Those two young men were waiting for just the right opportunity to slip into our vigil schedule and take them. No matter; it did not stop us. Our 40 Days for Life campaign is about much more than a vigil bag and some signs!

A couple of us were joking about how maybe it will be like when the Philistines stole the Ark of the Covenant. The Philistines were beset with tragedies while they had the Ark in their possession. But – No! We do not wish any ill upon those two young men. We just pray that they read through all of the material in the vigil bag and come to conversion! We’d love to have them join us on the sidewalk as converts!

(And – yes, it has all been reported to the Madison Police Dept.)

We still are struggling to fill those overnight hours! Please help where you can!

OPEN HOURS

Monday, 10/5 1 needed at 12a; 1 needed at 1a; 1 needed at 2a; 1 needed at 3a; (Right now the second person at all 4 of these hours is a woman – if another man signs up – we can let them off the hook for these hours); 1 needed at 7a; 2 needed at 5p; 1 needed at 8p and 1 needed at 11p.

Tuesday, 10/6 1 needed at 3a; 1 needed at 5a; 1 needed at 6a; 1 needed at 8a; 2 needed at 6p; 2 needed at 7p; 2 needed at 8p and 2 needed at 11p.

You Are Our Mother
Pope Paul VI (1897-1978) (Pontiff 1963-1978)

O Mary,
look upon all mankind,
this modern world in which
the divine will calls us to live and work.
It is a world that has turned its back
on the light of Christ;
then it fears and bemoans the frightening shadows
that its actions have created on all sides.
May your most human voice,
O most beautiful of virgins,
O most worthy of mothers,
O blessed among women,
invited the world to turn its eyes
toward the life that is the light of man,
toward you who are the precursor-lamp of Christ,
Who is the sole and the highest Light of the world.
Implore for the world
the true understanding of its own existence;
implore for the world
the joy of living as the creation of God
and hence the desire and the capacity
to converse–by prayer– with its Maker,
whose mysterious and blessed image
it reflects within itself.
Implore for the world
the grace to esteem everything as the gift of God
and hence the virtue to work with generosity
and to make use of such gifts wisely and providently.
Implore peace for the world.
Fashion brothers and sisters
out of persons who are so divided.
Guide us to a more ordered and peaceful society.
For those who are suffering–
today there are so many and ever new ones,
afflicted by current misfortunes–
obtain solace;
and for the dead, obtain eternal rest.
Show yourself a mother to us;
this is our prayer,
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

Amen.

Here’s today’s devotional from Rev. Ben Sheldon, president emeritus of Presbyterians Pro-Life…

Day 5 intention

May the truth of the final judgment shape our thoughts, priorities, and choices here on earth.

Scripture

The King will answer and say to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”
— Matthew 25:31-46

Reflection
Caring for others is not optional.

Jesus’ picture of the final judgment concludes with this sobering word: the wicked, who failed to care for others in their various needs (e.g., the hungry, the thirsty, the aliens, the naked, the sick, the imprisoned) will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous who did seek to meet those needs will end up with him, enjoying eternal life.

We know that this was no parable! Jesus has given us fair warning! Everything in God’s Word points to the truth that compassionate concern and practical care for all people, especially for the poor, the destitute, the weak and needy is required of us, if indeed we hope to escape the punishment of the fire of hell.

And who are the poor and needy, if not helpless, unborn babies, as well as the aged and infirm at the other end of life? Surely the “least of these” embraces not only those at both ends of the continuum of life, but all others in between.

Just how we, as Christ’s true followers, respond to his admonition “inasmuch as you did it to the least of these, you did it to me” will determine whether we enjoy eternal bliss in his presence or the bleak and dreadful reality of eternal punishment in hell. Nothing in God’s Word could be clearer!

Prayer
Gracious and merciful Father, we gladly embrace your Word that counsels us to care for the least of your children, and we renew our dedication to defending the unborn and all whose right to life is compromised by our godless society’s selfish lack of concern. Free us from our own failures and sins so that we will be truly pro-life in every area of our lives. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Still looking for more men to fill our open overnight hours!
