We need you on the sidewalk this week!

In today’s first reading (1 Samuel 1:20-22, 24-28), Hannah’s prayers for a child were answered when she conceived a son. In her earlier inability to bear children, she felt that God had not shown favor upon her or her marriage. As we all know, babies/children are truly a gift and a blessing from God.

Bring your witness to the sidewalk this week and pray for the young mothers to see the baby in their womb as a gift and a blessing.

OPEN HOURS
Monday, 12/28 – 2 needed at 9a.
Tuesday, 12/29 – 1 needed at 12p; 1 needed at 1p; 2 needed at 2p; 2 needed at 3p and 2 needed at 4p.

Let us pray
[as the family of God
who share in his life]

Father in heaven, creator of all,
you ordered the earth to bring forth life,
and crowned its goodness
by creating the family of man.
In history’s moment when all was ready
You sent your Son to dwell in time,
obedient to the laws of life in our world.
Teach us the sanctity of human love,
show us the value of family life,
and help us to live in peace with all men
that we may share in your life forever.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

“And Joseph too went up to Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David, that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was not room for them in the inn. Now, there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” “ Luke 2: 4-14

On Tuesday, a prayer warrior who was witnessing for life that day called to share with me of a Christmas gift he’d received. He had just spent an hour plus talking to a young woman who he had been able to direct over to the Woman’s Care Center. She was in the Woman’s Care Center for about 3 hours and when she came out he was able to speak with her. She had started her day as a very abortion-minded mother. By the time she left the Woman’s Care Center and our prayer warrior, she was ready to choose life for her baby! Praise God!

We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas! We are filled with gratitude for the gift of time you all give to Vigil for Life whenever you are on the sidewalk witnessing for life.

May the beauty and wonder of the birth of the infant Jesus (God made flesh) fill your hearts this Christmas and throughout the New Year!

ADVENT PRAYER FOR LIFE
By: Fr. Frank Pavone, Priests for Life

God of Life,
We rejoice in the promise of your coming.

You have sent your Son, born in Bethlehem.
He is the Prince of Peace, and
The one in whose name all oppression shall cease.

May we welcome his coming each day
And prepare for his coming at the end of time.
May we build a culture that welcomes him
By welcoming every child, born and unborn.

We pray through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation

Recently I read through Ronald Reagan’s essay entitled Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation. Here is a part of that great work that he wrote: “Abortion concerns not just the unborn child, it concerns every one of us. The English poet, John Donne, wrote: “… any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

We cannot diminish the value of one category of human life—the unborn—without diminishing the value of all human life. We saw tragic proof of this truism last year when the Indiana courts allowed the starvation death of “Baby Doe” in Bloomington because the child had Down’s Syndrome.

Many of our fellow citizens grieve over the loss of life that has followed Roe v. Wade. Margaret Heckler, soon after being nominated to head the largest department of our government, Health and Human Services, told an audience that she believed abortion to be the greatest moral crisis facing our country today. And the revered Mother Teresa, who works in the streets of Calcutta ministering to dying people in her world-famous mission of mercy, has said that “the greatest misery of our time is the generalized abortion of children.”

Over the first two years of my Administration I have closely followed and assisted efforts in Congress to reverse the tide of abortion-efforts of Congressmen, Senators and citizens responding to an urgent moral crisis. Regrettably, I have also seen the massive efforts of those who, under the banner of “freedom of choice,” have so far blocked every effort to reverse nationwide abortion-on-demand.

Despite the formidable obstacles before us, we must not lose heart. This is not the first time our country has been divided by a Supreme Court decision that denied the value of certain human lives. The Dred Scott decision of 1857 was not overturned in a day, or a year, or even a decade. At first, only a minority of Americans recognized and deplored the moral crisis brought about by denying the full humanity of our black brothers and sisters; but that minority persisted in their vision and finally prevailed. They did it by appealing to the hearts and minds of their countrymen, to the truth of human dignity under God. From their example, we know that respect for the sacred value of human life is too deeply engrained in the hearts of our people to remain forever suppressed. But the great majority of the American people have not yet made their voices heard, and we cannot expect them to—any more than the public voice arose against slavery—until the issue is clearly framed and presented.” If you have time and have not read it, I recommend reading this essay by Ronald Reagan. 75% no-show rate when we are praying outside PP

Here are the final statistics from the 2015 Fall 40 Days for Life campaign that took place in 307 cities in 16 different countries:

834 babies lives were saved (that we know of) and their mothers lives were spared from abortion.

9 workers at abortion facilities experienced conversions and left their jobs.

This campaign saw the first 40 Days for Life campaign happen at Planned Parenthood in Greenwich Village in New York City. This particular Planned Parenthood averages about 11,000 abortions per year. Praise God that there is now a peaceful, prayerful pro-life presence outside of this facility!!

Another first campaign happened in Bogota Colombia. This campaign had around 2,500 participants. God is so good! 2,500 participants for a first-time ever campaign? Phenomenal!

Just a reminder that the no-show rate for appointments at abortion facilities with a pro-life presence outside of them is as high as 75%!

Please bring your peaceful, prayerful presence to the sidewalk this week!

OPEN HOURS

A Pro-life Prayer for Thanksgiving Day

By: Fr. Frank Pavone
Father of mercies,
God of all creation,
Source of life and of every blessing,
We thank you today, and every day of our lives,
For all that you give us!

Our thanksgiving is not only a duty,
But a joy and a source of strength,
Because it reminds us of your faithful love,
And inspires us with the hope of a future filled with blessings!

Lord, we thank you for guiding our fathers,
Who, inspired by the prophets
And by the saving work of your Son,
Founded a nation where all might live as one,
Acknowledging their dependence on you
As the source of their right to life.

We thank you for your blessings in the past,
And for all that, with your help, we must yet achieve.

We ask you to bless us as we thank you,
That our giving thanks may be accompanied by our firm resolve
To proclaim, celebrate, and serve
The gift of human life, born and unborn.

We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

LOTS of open hours on Wednesday, 11/18

Dear Friends of Life,

As many of us have heard, the Planned Parenthood in Appleton has suspended performing abortions for, at least, six months as they do not have an abortionist for that facility. To make themselves seem more “caring” towards women perhaps traveling from a long distance to the Planned Parenthood in Madison, NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin has launched a “Patient Stays Wisconsin” program which they say offers free room and board for a woman who chooses to have an abortion. They will be testing this program in Madison.

This program could also be called the, “Let us make it easier for you to kill your baby” program or the “Need an incentive to kill your baby? We’ve got that covered” program. Such twlsted logic – if it can even be called logic.

So, Yes! We must keep our vigil schedule filled. We must have a strong peaceful, prayerful presence out there in the coming weeks and months ahead.

Prayer for Peace by St. John XXIII

Lord Jesus Christ, who are called the Prince of Peace, who are yourself our peace and reconciliation,
who so often said, “Peace to you,” grant us peace. Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice,
and brotherly love. Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers
that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples of the earth become
as brothers and sisters. May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all.

Amen.

Give new hope to their parents,
that they may turn away from the desperate act of abortion.
Grant conversion to the abortionist and to the staff.
Show us how we are to respond to the bloodshed in our midst,
And lead us to the day when this place of death
Will be transformed into a haven of life.
Guard us with your joy and your peace,
For in You, life is victorious.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Back to 365 for Life! Open hours this week!

To all 40 Days for Life participants –

You are all answers to prayers that have been prayed before this 40 Days for Life campaign and all of the way through it. Thank you for listening to God speaking in your hearts and for coming to the sidewalk to take part in this year’s 40 Days for Life campaign.

This year there were 307 cities in 16 different countries that took part in this fall’s 40 Days for Life campaign. Since the start of it, there have been 543 babies and their mothers saved from abortion (that we know of). On Sept. 22nd in Madison, a young woman approached one of our prayer warriors and told him that she had an appointment for an abortion on Sept. 24th. She gave this prayer warrior the joyful news that she had chosen life for her baby due to our presence out on the sidewalk. Isn’t that beautiful? Praise God!

Early on in this Madison campaign two young men slid into our vigil line-up and absconded with our vigil bag and all of its contents as well as with our two big signs. I’m not sure if they thought they would stop us or what their purpose was however – of course – that did not stop us. Thanks to a great team – we did not skip a beat!

I would like to give special recognition to people without whom this 40 Days for Life would have fallen flat.

Mary Markielewski, our Vigil Captain coordinator. If an hour was not filled and we couldn’t find anyone to fill it, Mary did. At last count, Mary was at around 90 hours on the sidewalk during this campaign. God bless you, Mary!

Our Vigil Captains: Bliss Thiel, Ken Pientka, Rebecca Miller, Katie Mueller, Kathleen Terry and Laura Stuczynski. They were the ones making calls to get hours filled! Thank you all for your dedication and time!

Huan Hoang also really stepped up and filled hours when nobody else could be found. At last count, Huan was at around 34 hours on the sidewalk during this campaign. Huan’s motto became, “You can’t out give God!” Huan was also the one to get the new vigil bag and binder deployed the same night it was taken. Thank you so much, Huan!

Others high up in hours: Joe Nicosia gave his witness for 30 hours and Karen Wagner gave her witness for 28 hours during this campaign. Thank you Joe and Karen!

Ken Pientka -also no stranger to vigil hours this campaign – was out on the sidewalk for around 23 hours during this campaign.

Other individuals who stepped in and filled hours at the last minute or helped in other ways: Alan Mahinski, John Bohn, Bob Dorn, Vern Acker and Ben Yanke.

We also would have been lost without our parish liaisons! Thanks to all of you that helped motivate and organize people from your parishes to get them to the sidewalk!

The parish with the most cumulative hours between its different groups was once again St. Joseph’s in Baraboo. Between their K of C, Daughters of Isabella and parish vigil hour commitments – St. Joe’s filled 44 vigil hours.

Thank you to all of the K of C groups and other men’s and women’s prayer groups that filled many blocks of hours too!

Thank you all so much for the gift or your prayers and time (We also want to thank all of the spouses and families for their sacrifices of having one or more family members giving so much time to 40 Days for Life. Just as that person made sacrifices to be out on the sidewalk – their family members made sacrifices because they were without them for that time).

Of course, we will never really know how much difference our prayers and presence have made until we get to Heaven. We are assured on earth of the difference it makes when we hear the beautiful stories of the mothers who have chosen life for their babies like we heard just before this campaign began.

Vigil for Life is so grateful to God for all of you!

Although 40 Days for Life is over for another year, we still have our 365 for Life campaign with vigil hours to fill! Thanks, in advance, for your time!

Day 41 intention

Pray that the witness of 40 Days for Life bears abundant fruit, and that we begin again each day to storm the gates of hell until God welcomes us into the gates of heaven.

Scripture

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. On this rock I will build my church; the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

— Matthew 16:18

Reflection from Fr. Frank Pavone

When we read this verse, we usually think that the Lord is promising that the church, which is His Body, will withstand all the attacks launched against it.

Of course, that is true. But when we think about it more carefully, we realize that in a battle, the gates do not run out into the battlefield to attack the enemy. Rather, they stand still to defend the city from the enemy attacking it.

So when the Lord says that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church, who is doing the attacking?

It is the church storming the gates!

The church, all of God’s people in Christ, is called to take the offensive, to run into enemy territory, and to gain ground for Jesus Christ.

We do not wait for an invitation; we already have a command.

We prepare, but we do not wait for circumstances to be perfect; we already have one who has gone before us.

During these 40 days, we have stormed the gates. We have taken the offensive. We have pushed forward the boundaries of the kingdom. And we must keep doing so, in numerous ways.

Indeed, the gates of hell will not prevail. The gates of falsehood will flee in the presence of truth. The gates of sin will melt in the presence of grace. The gates of death will fall in the presence of the church, the People of Life!

Prayer

Father, we praise you. We have heard the voice of your Son, and therefore we can make our voices heard.

We have done battle with the power of evil, and therefore we can have compassion on those still within its grip. We have been freed from the kingdom of darkness, and therefore we can bear witness to your Kingdom of Light.

May the witness of all your people through these 40 Days for Life bear abundant fruit, and may we begin again each day to storm the gates of hell until You welcome us into the gates of heaven.

We pray in the victorious name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
